alma는 kind and nourishing이란 뜻.
친절하고 자양분이 되는.. 이런 의미.
mater는 Mother.. 엄마
epithet은 번역이 좀 어려운데, 단순하게 '별명'이라고 하긴 그렇고
어떤 사람을 설명하거나 캐릭터를 보여주기 위해 앞에 쓰는 말
alma mater는
농업과 자손 번식의 여신인 Ceres(시어리즈) 같은 여신들의 epithet이었는데,
친절하고 풍요로움을 주는 여신 시어리즈.. 이렇게.
지금까지 운영되는 가장 오래된 대학인 볼로냐 대학의
이탈리아 이름이 Alma mater studiorum - Universita di Bologna로
alma mater studiorum을 epithet처럼 써버린 모양.
학문적 자양분을 주는 엄마 - 볼로냐 대학. 이런 식.
alumnus는 영양분을 받은 사람(one who is nourished)이란 뜻이고,
(alumnus는 남성형, alumna는 여성형)
복수는 alumni. (여성형의 복수는 alumnae)
졸업생과는 또 좀 의미가 다른 모양인데,
alma mater
; the school, college, or university that one once attended.
다니던 학교..로 졸업한 학교가 아닌 것처럼.
alumni도 졸업하지 않더라도 alumni.
예를들면,
빌게이츠는 하버드 대학교 졸업생은 아니지만 alumni 명단에는 들어가는 식.
